śrī-bhagavān uvāca
bhūya eva mahā-bāho śṛṇu me paramaḿ vacaḥ
yat te’haḿ prīyamāṇāya vakṣyāmi hitakāmyayā
De Allerhoogste Persoonlijkheid Gods zei: Luister opnieuw, o sterkarmige Arjuna. Omdat je Mijn dierbare vriend bent, zal Ik voor jouw bestwil verder spreken en je kennis geven die beter is dan wat Ik tot dusver aan je heb uitgelegd.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Listen again, O mighty-armed Arjuna. Because you are My dear friend, for your benefit I shall speak to you further, giving knowledge that is better than what I have already explained.

na me viduḥ suragaṇāḥ prabhavaḿ na maharṣayaḥ
aham ādir hi devānāḿ maharṣīṇāḿ ca sarvaśaḥ
De schare halfgoden en ook de grote wijzen kennen Mijn oorsprong en volheden niet, omdat Ik in alle opzichten de oorsprong van de halfgoden en wijzen ben.
Neither the hosts of demigods nor the great sages know My origin or opulences, for, in every respect, I am the source of the demigods and sages.

yo mām ajam anādiḿ ca vetti loka-maheśvaram
asaḿmūḍhaḥ sa martyeṣu sarva-pāpaiḥ pramucyate
Alleen degene die Mij kent als ongeboren, beginloos en de Allerhoogste Heer van alle werelden en die niet misleid is onder de mensen, wordt bevrijd van alle zonden.
He who knows Me as the unborn, as the beginningless, as the Supreme Lord of all the worlds — he only, undeluded among men, is freed from all sins.

buddhir jñānam asaḿmohaḥ kṣamā satyaḿ damaḥ śamaḥ
sukhaḿ duḥkhaḿ bhavo’bhāvo bhayaḿ cābhayam eva ca
ahiḿsā samatā tuṣṭis tapo dānaḿ yaśo’yaśaḥ
bhavanti bhāvā bhūtānāḿ matta eva pṛthag-vidhāḥ
Intelligentie; kennis; vrij zijn van twijfel en verwarring; vergevensgezindheid; waarheidlievendheid; beheersing van de zintuigen; beheersing van de geest; vreugde en verdriet; geboorte; dood; angst; onbevreesdheid; geweldloosheid; gelijkmoedigheid; tevredenheid; ascese; vrijgevigheid; roem en schande—al deze verschillende kwaliteiten van levende wezens zijn geschapen door Mij alleen.
Intelligence, knowledge, freedom from doubt and delusion, forgiveness, truthfulness, control of the senses, control of the mind, happiness and distress, birth, death, fear, fearlessness, nonviolence, equanimity, satisfaction, austerity, charity, fame and infamy — all these various qualities of living beings are created by Me alone.

maharṣayaḥ sapta pūrve catvāro manavas tathā
mad-bhāvā mānasā jātā yeṣāḿ loka imāḥ prajāḥ
De zeven grote wijzen en de vier andere grote wijzen voor hen, evenals de Manu’s [de voorouders van de mensheid], komen uit Mij voort door geboorte uit Mijn geest, en alle levende wezens, die de verschillende planeten bevolken, stammen van hen af.
The seven great sages and before them the four other great sages and the Manus [progenitors of mankind] come from Me, born from My mind, and all the living beings populating the various planets descend from them.

etāḿ vibhūtiḿ yogaḿ ca mama yo vetti tattvataḥ
so’vikampena yogena yujyate nātra saḿśayaḥ
Wie werkelijk overtuigd is van Mijn volheid en mystieke kracht, zal onvermengde devotionele dienst verrichten; daarover bestaat geen twijfel.
One who is factually convinced of this opulence and mystic power of Mine engages in unalloyed devotional service; of this there is no doubt.

ahaḿ sarvasya prabhavo mattaḥ sarvaḿ pravartate
iti matvā bhajante māḿ budhā bhāva-samanvitāḥ
Ik ben de oorsprong van alle spirituele en materiele werelden. Alles komt voort uit Mij. De wijzen die hiervan volkomen doordrongen zijn, bewijzen Me devotionele dienst en vereren Me met heel hun hart.
I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me. The wise who perfectly know this engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all their hearts.

mac-cittā mad-gata-prāṇā bodhayantaḥ parasparam
kathayantaś ca māḿ nityaḿ tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca
De gedachten van Mijn zuivere toegewijden zijn voortdurend van Mij vervuld, hun leven is volledig gewijd aan Mijn dienst en door elkaar te verlichten en voortdurend over Mij te spreken, ervaren ze grote tevredenheid en geluk
The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me.

teṣāḿ satata-yuktānāḿ bhajatāḿ prīti-pūrvakam
dadāmi buddhi-yogaḿ taḿ yena mām upayānti te
Aan hen die Mij voortdurend met liefde en devotie dienen, geef Ik het verstand waarmee ze tot Me kunnen komen.
To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me.

teṣām evānukampārtham aham ajñāna-jaḿ tamaḥ
nāśayāmy ātma-bhāva-stho jñāna-dīpena bhāsvatā
Om hen bijzondere genade te tonen, verdrijf Ik, die aanwezig ben in hun hart, met de stralende lamp van kennis de duisternis, die voortkomt uit onwetendheid.
To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.

arjuna uvāca
paraḿ brahma paraḿ dhāma pavitraḿ paramaḿ bhavān
puruṣaḿ śāśvataḿ divyam ādi-devam ajaḿ vibhum
āhus tvām ṛṣayaḥ sarve devarṣir nāradas tathā
asito devalo vyāsaḥ svayaḿ caiva bravīṣi me
Arjuna zei: Jij bent de Allerhoogste Persoonlijkheid Gods, de allerhoogste verblijfplaats, de zuiverste, de Absolute Waarheid. Jij bent de eeuwige, transcendentale en oorspronkelijke persoon, de ongeborene, de grootste. Alle grote wijzen zoals Närada, Asita, Devala en Vyäsa bevestigen deze waarheid over Jou en nu verklaar Je het me Zelf.
Arjuna said: You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the ultimate abode, the purest, the Absolute Truth. You are the eternal, transcendental, original person, the unborn, the greatest. All the great sages such as Nārada, Asita, Devala and Vyāsa confirm this truth about You, and now You Yourself are declaring it to me.

sarvam etad ṛtaḿ manye yan māḿ vadasi keśava
na hi te bhagavan vyaktiḿ vidur devā na dānavāḥ
O Kṛṣṇa, alles wat Je me gezegd hebt aanvaard ik volledig als de waarheid. Zowel de halfgoden als de demonen, o Heer, kunnen Je vorm en Je transcendentale eigenschappen niet begrijpen.
O Kṛṣṇa, I totally accept as truth all that You have told me. Neither the demigods nor the demons, O Lord, can understand Your personality.

svayam evātmanātmānaḿ vettha tvaḿ puruṣottama
bhūta-bhāvana bhūteśa deva-deva jagatpate
Sterker nog, alleen Jij kent Jezelf door Je eigen interne vermogen, o Allerhoogste Persoon, oorsprong van alles, Heer van alle wezens, God der goden, Heer van het universum!
Indeed, You alone know Yourself by Your own internal potency, O Supreme Person, origin of all, Lord of all beings, God of gods, Lord of the universe!

vaktum arhasy aśeṣeṇa divyā hy ātma-vibhūtayaḥ
yābhir vibhūtibhir lokān imāḿs tvaḿ vyāpya tiṣṭhasi
Vertel me alsjeblieft uitvoerig over Je goddelijke volheden waarmee Je al deze werelden doordringt.
Please tell me in detail of Your divine opulences by which You pervade all these worlds.

kathaḿ vidyām ahaḿ yogiḿs tvāḿ sadā paricintayan
keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu cintyo’si bhagavan mayā
O Kṛṣṇa, o allerhoogste mysticus, hoe zal Ik voortdurend aan Je denken en hoe zal ik Je kennen? In welke verschillende verschijningsvormen moet ik Je in gedachten houden, o Allerhoogste Persoonlijkheid Gods?
O Kṛṣṇa, O supreme mystic, how shall I constantly think of You, and how shall I know You? In what various forms are You to be remembered, O Supreme Personality of Godhead?

vistareṇātmano yogaḿ vibhūtiḿ ca janārdana
bhūyaḥ kathaya tṛptir hi śṛṇvato nāsti me’mṛtam
O Janärdana, beschrijf alsjeblieft nogmaals uitvoerig Je mystieke volheden. Ik krijg er nooit genoeg van over Jou te horen, want hoe meer ik hoor, hoe meer ik de nectar van Je woorden wil proeven.
O Janārdana, again please describe in detail the mystic power of Your opulences. I am never satiated in hearing about You, for the more I hear the more I want to taste the nectar of Your words.

śrī-bhagavān uvāca
hanta te kathayiṣyāmi divyā hy ātma-vibhūtayaḥ
prādhānyataḥ kuru-śreṣṭha nāsty anto vistarasya me
De Allerhoogste Persoonlijkheid Gods zei: Ja, Ik zal je over Mijn luisterrijke manifestaties vertellen, maar dan alleen over de voornaamste, o Arjuna, want Mijn volheid is onbegrensd.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Yes, I will tell you of My splendorous manifestations, but only of those which are prominent, O Arjuna, for My opulence is limitless.

aham ātmā guḍākeśa sarva-bhūtāśaya-sthitaḥ
aham ādiś ca madhyaḿ ca bhūtānām anta eva ca
Ik ben de Superziel, o Arjuna, die zich in het hart van alle levende wezens bevindt. Ik ben het begin, het midden en het einde van alle wezens.
I am the Supersoul, O Arjuna, seated in the hearts of all living entities. I am the beginning, the middle and the end of all beings.

ādityānām ahaḿ viṣṇur jyotiṣāḿ ravir aḿśumān
marīcir marutām asmi nakṣatrāṇām ahaḿ śaśī
Onder de Äditya’s ben Ik Viṣṇu, van de lichtgevende hemellichamen ben Ik de stralende zon, onder de Maruts ben Ik Marīci en van de sterren ben Ik de maan.
Of the Ādityas I am Viṣṇu, of lights I am the radiant sun, of the Maruts I am Marīci, and among the stars I am the moon.

vedānāḿ sāma-vedo’smi devānām asmi vāsavaḥ
indriyāṇāḿ manaś cāsmi bhūtānām asmi cetanā
Van de veda’s ben Ik de Säma Veda; onder de halfgoden ben Ik Indra, de hemelkoning; van de zintuigen ben Ik de geest en in de levende wezens ben Ik de levenskracht [bewustzijn].
Of the Vedas I am the Sāma Veda; of the demigods I am Indra, the king of heaven; of the senses I am the mind; and in living beings I am the living force [consciousness].

rudrāṇāḿ śaḿkaraś cāsmi vitteśo yakṣa-rakṣasām
vasūnāḿ pāvakaścāsmi meruḥ śikhariṇām aham
Onder alle Rudra’s ben ik Heer Śiva; onder de Yakṣas en Rākṣasas ben Ik de heer van de rijkdom [Kuvera]; onder de Vasu’s ben Ik vuur [Agni] en van de bergen ben Ik Meru.
Of all the Rudras I am Lord Śiva, of the Yakṣas and Rākṣasas I am the Lord of wealth [Kuvera], of the Vasus I am fire [Agni], and of mountains I am Meru.

purodhasāḿ ca mukhyaḿ māḿ viddhi pārtha bṛhaspatim
senānīnām ahaḿ skandaḥ sarasām asmi sāgaraḥ
Weet, o Arjuna, dat Ik van alle priesters de voornaamste, Bṛhaspati, ben. Onder de bevelhebbers ben Ik Kärtikeya en van watervlakten ben Ik de oceaan.
Of priests, O Arjuna, know Me to be the chief, Bṛhaspati. Of generals I am Kārtikeya, and of bodies of water I am the ocean.

maharṣīṇāḿ bhṛgur ahaḿ girām asmy ekam akṣaram
yajñānāḿ japa-yajño’smi sthāvarāṇāḿ himālayaḥ
Onder de grote wijzen ben Ik Bhṛgu; van alle geluidsvibraties ben Ik het transcendentale oà; van alle offers ben Ik het chanten van de heilige namen [japa] en van onverplaatsbare dingen ben Ik het Himälaya-gebergte.
Of the great sages I am Bhṛgu; of vibrations I am the transcendental oḿ. Of sacrifices I am the chanting of the holy names [japa], and of immovable things I am the Himālayas.

aśvatthaḥ sarva-vṛkṣāṇāḿ devarṣīṇāḿ ca nāradaḥ
gandharvāṇāḿ citrarathaḥ siddhānāḿ kapilo muniḥ
Van alle bomen ben Ik de banyan-boom en van de wijzen onder de halfgoden ben Ik Närada. Onder de Gandharva’s ben Ik Citraratha en onder de volmaakte wezens ben Ik de wijze Kapila.
Of all trees I am the banyan tree, and of the sages among the demigods I am Nārada. Of the Gandharvas I am Citraratha, and among perfected beings I am the sage Kapila.

uccaiḥśravasam aśvānāḿ viddhi mām amṛtodbhavam
airāvataḿ gajendrāṇāḿ narāṇāḿ ca narādhipam
Weet dat Ik onder paarden Uccaiḥśravā ben, die werd voortgebracht tijdens het karnen van de oceaan voor nectar. Onder voorname olifanten ben Ik Airävata en onder de mensen ben Ik de koning.
Of horses know Me to be Uccaiḥśravā, produced during the churning of the ocean for nectar. Of lordly elephants I am Airāvata, and among men I am the monarch.

āyudhānām ahaḿ vajraḿ dhenūnām asmi kāma-dhuk
prajanaś cāsmi kandarpaḥ sarpāṇām asmi vāsukiḥ
Van alle wapens ben Ik de bliksemschicht en onder de koeien ben Ik de surabhi. Van alle oorzaken van voortplanting ben Ik Kandarpa, de god van de liefde, en onder de slangen ben Ik Väsuki.
Of weapons I am the thunderbolt; among cows I am the surabhi. Of causes for procreation I am Kandarpa, the god of love, and of serpents I am Vāsuki.

anantaś cāsmi nāgānāḿ varuṇo yādasām aham
pitṛṇām aryamā cāsmi yamaḥ saḿyamatām aham
Onder de Näga’s met vele schilden ben Ik Ananta en onder de waterwezens ben Ik de halfgod Varuṇa. Onder de overleden voorouders ben Ik Aryamä en onder hen die orde en wet handhaven ben Ik Yama, de heer van de dood.
Of the many-hooded Nāgas I am Ananta, and among the aquatics I am the demigod Varuṇa. Of departed ancestors I am Aryamā, and among the dispensers of law I am Yama, the lord of death.

prahlādaś cāsmi daityānāḿ kālaḥ kalayatām aham
mṛgāṇāḿ ca mṛgendro’haḿ vainateyaś ca pakṣiṇām
Onder de Daitya’s [demonen] ben Ik de toegewijde Prahläda; van alle overheersers ben Ik de tijd; van alle dieren ben Ik de leeuw en onder de vogels ben Ik Garuda.
Among the Daitya demons I am the devoted Prahlāda, among subduers I am time, among beasts I am the lion, and among birds I am Garuḍa.

pavanaḥ pavatām asmi rāmaḥ śastra-bhṛtām aham
jhaṣāṇāḿ makaraś cāsmi srotasām asmi jāhnavī
Van alles wat zuivert ben Ik de wind; onder degenen die wapens hanteren ben Ik Räma; van de vissen ben Ik de haai en van de rivieren ben Ik de Ganges.
Of purifiers I am the wind, of the wielders of weapons I am Rāma, of fishes I am the shark, and of flowing rivers I am the Ganges.

sargāṇām ādir antaś ca madhyaḿ caivāham arjuna
adhyātma-vidyā vidyānāḿ vādaḥ pravadatām aham
Van alle scheppingen ben Ik het begin, het einde en ook het midden, O Arjuna. Van alle wetenschappen ben Ik de spirituele wetenschap van het zelf en onder beoefenaars van de logica ben Ik de uiteindelijke waarheid.
Of all creations I am the beginning and the end and also the middle, O Arjuna. Of all sciences I am the spiritual science of the self, and among logicians I am the conclusive truth.

akṣarāṇām akāro’smi dvandvaḥ sāmāsikasya ca
aham evākṣayaḥ kālo dhātāhaḿ viśvato-mukhaḥ
Van de letters ben Ik de letter A en van samengestelde woorden ben Ik het tweeledige woord. Ook ben Ik de eeuwige tijd, en onder de scheppers ben Ik Brahmä.
Of letters I am the letter A, and among compound words I am the dual compound. I am also inexhaustible time, and of creators I am Brahmā.

mṛtyuḥ sarva-haraś cāham udbhavaś ca bhaviṣyatām
kīrtiḥ śrīr vāk ca nārīṇāḿ smṛtir medhā dhṛtiḥ kṣamā
ik ben de allesverslindende dood en de voortbrenger van al wat komen zal. Onder vrouwen ben Ik Kirti (roem), Sri (geluk), Väk (welsprekendheid), Smrti (geheugen), Medhä (intelligentie), Dhåti (standvastigheid) en Ksamä (geduld).
I am all-devouring death, and I am the generating principle of all that is yet to be. Among women I am fame, fortune, fine speech, memory, intelligence, steadfastness and patience.

bṛhat-sāma tathā sāmnāḿ gāyatrī chandasām aham
māsānāḿ mārgaśīrṣo’ham ṛtūnāḿ kusumākaraḥ
Van de hymnen in de Säma Veda ben Ik de Bṛhat-säma en van alle poezie ben Ik de GäyatrI. Van alle maanden ben Ik Mārgaśīrṣa [november-december] en van de jaargetijden ben Ik de bloeiende lente.
Of the hymns in the Sāma Veda I am the Bṛhat-sāma, and of poetry I am the Gāyatrī. Of months I am Mārgaśīrṣa [November-December], and of seasons I am flower-bearing spring.

dyūtaḿ chalayatām asmi tejas tejasvinām aham
jayo’smi vyavasāyo’smi sattvaḿ sattvavatām aham
Ik ben ook het gokken van valsspelers en van al wat schittert ben Ik de schittering. Ik ben overwinning, Ik ben avontuur en Ik ben de kracht van de sterken.
I am also the gambling of cheats, and of the splendid I am the splendor. I am victory, I am adventure, and I am the strength of the strong.

vṛṣṇīnāḿ vāsudevo’smi pāṇḍavānāḿ dhanaḿjayaḥ
munīnām apy ahaḿ vyāsaḥ kavīnām uśanā kaviḥ
Onder de afstammelingen van Vṛṣṇi ben Ik Väsudeva en onder de Pāṇḍavas ben Ik Arjuna. Onder de wijzen ben Ik Vyäsa en onder grote denkers ben Ik Uśanā.
Of the descendants of Vṛṣṇi I am Vāsudeva, and of the Pāṇḍavas I am Arjuna. Of the sages I am Vyāsa, and among great thinkers I am Uśanā.

daṇḍo damayatām asmi nītir asmi jigīṣatām
maunaḿ caivāsmi guhyānāḿ jñānaḿ jñānavatām aham
Van alle middelen om wetteloosheid tegen te gaan, ben Ik de straf en onder degenen die overwinning nastreven, ben Ik moraliteit. Van geheime dingen ben Ik de stilte en Ik ben de wijsheid van de wijzen.
Among all means of suppressing lawlessness I am punishment, and of those who seek victory I am morality. Of secret things I am silence, and of the wise I am the wisdom.

yac cāpi sarva-bhūtānāḿ bījaḿ tad aham arjuna
na tad asti vinā yat syān mayā bhūtaḿ carācaram
Verder ben Ik het zaad dat alle vormen van bestaan verwekt, o Arjuna. Er is geen wezen—of het nu in staat is te bewegen of niet—dat zonder Mij kan bestaan.
Furthermore, O Arjuna, I am the generating seed of all existences. There is no being — moving or nonmoving — that can exist without Me.

nānto’sti mama divyānāḿ vibhūtīnāḿ parantapa
eṣa tūddeśataḥ prokto vibhūter vistaro mayā
O machtige overwinnaar van vijanden, Mijn goddelijke manifestaties zijn oneindig. Wat Ik je verteld heb is slechts een summiere aanduiding van Mijn ontelbare volheden.
O mighty conqueror of enemies, there is no end to My divine manifestations. What I have spoken to you is but a mere indication of My infinite opulences.

yad yad vibhūtimat sattvaḿ śrīmad ūrjitam eva vā
tat tad evāvagaccha tvaḿ mama tejo’ḿśa-saḿbhavam
Weet dat alle rijke, prachtige en luisterrijke scheppingen slechts voortkomen uit een sprank van Mijn schitterende grootsheid.
Know that all opulent, beautiful and glorious creations spring from but a spark of My splendor.

atha vā bahunaitena kiḿ jñātena tavārjuna
viṣṭabhyāham idaḿ kṛtsnam ekāḿśena sthito jagat
Maar waar is al deze gedetailleerde kennis voor nodig, Arjuna? Met een enkel deeltje van Mijzelf doordring en draag Ik dit hele universum.
But what need is there, Arjuna, for all this detailed knowledge? With a single fragment of Myself I pervade and support this entire universe.
